First and foremost we're not talking about the buzz. Now that that is out of the way, I present my first editorial for The Sonic Spectrum. Please enjoy. July 22, 2016, San Diego "SEGA Proudly Presents" "Yes? THIS IS IT!" "In cooperation with Christian Whitehead" "No way..." It was beautiful. The music combined with those picture perfect pixels made just about every single fan lost their mind. Except for me. Don't get me wrong I was thrilled that we were getting a new Sonic game, but this wasn't right. This game was so 90's. It was stuck in the past and that's what made it awesome. A game like this made during the Saturn days might've taken a couple years, but this is 2016. Where's our 3D Sonic? It's been two years. Haven't they been developing something else? These were my thoughts during the next hour. Even Twitter was in a meltdown. People declaring that there would be no 3D Sonic next year. I'm not gonna lie, I was scared. The more and more I dug into the trailer I found certain details, such as no Sonic Team logo prominent in the title card, no Madeon music, (which was hinted at.) Also remember how early into the party this was announced: nearly to the one hour mark. There were still people stuck outside who had to watch on their phones. But then even more hope started to spread: "Special Announcement #2." What was it? The Sonic Movie? A clip of Sonic Boom Season 2? Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3? I was excited at first, and I did have some hope for a new Sonic game, but it just didn't seem possible. Yet the questions still lingered. "Could they really have two Sonic games in one year? Why would they ever announce a game early and then another one later? What was that 2017 game that they were so secretive about at that Japanese party? This couldn't be it. Could it? Then it hit me: This is Aaron Webber we're dealing with. A man who loves to constantly toy with the series' fans. Memes aside, it made even less sense now. Was he throwing us off, or was he expecting for us to think he was throwing us off but he wasn't? Just. Why? The time didn't pass quickly for me. Crush 40 did come out, and it was rough at times, but I couldn't resist singing along with some of my favorite songs. Then Sonic Boom happened. It was ok. I don't watch the show so it didn't matter to me. Sonic X Hello Kitty. Yeah. That wasn't great. Totinos. Kill me. It was 12:40 or so. It was do or die time. As Webber walked on to the stage and announced what "Special Announcement #2" was, I almost screamed. Look, the iconic "SEGA scream" is cool, and going the Generations route with having the fans say it was fun, but really? No. This couldn't be it. It couldn't be. "Well, the party's over. Thanks guys! Have a good night!" Then Iizuka steps in. "Aaron, we still have one more surprise." No. My jaw had dropped. "What do you mean there's one more surprise, the party's over!" I echoed Webber. Then it hit me. "They got me again." An image of Modern Sonic with a question mark in the middle appeared on the screen. This was it. What followed was one of the best trailers for any game I have ever seen. The tone was one that we had not seen in a very long time. Maybe even as dark as 06 itself, or at least what it tried to be. It was everything I wanted it to be. We were getting two Sonic games, and I was hyped.
